ABSTRACT
Backgrounds & Objectives
This study aimed to introduce the recently developed ‘Subjective Screening of Stuttering-Revised (SSS-R)’ and to evaluate the reliability and validity of this scale.
Methods
The English version of the SSS-R was translated into a Korean-version by 10 speech-language pathologists who have experience with stuttering therapy. Twenty-four adults with stuttering and 18 normal adults were self-rated using the Korean-version of SSS-R. Then, the reliability and validity of SSS-R was analyzed. Additionally, the subjective stuttering severity score and total score of SSS-R were compared to the objective stuttering severity score determined by a clinician.
Results
Those with significantly high indices were as follows: 1) Internal consistency and test-retest reliability; 2) Correlations between each score of 3 subscales and total score of the SSS-R; 3) Correlation between individual objective items and total objective score; 4) Item discrimination coefficients; and 5) Correlation between SSS-R and other subjective rating scales for stuttering. There were no significant differences in subjective stuttering severity or total scores determined by objective stuttering severity analysis.
Discussion & Conclusion
This study revealed that SSS-R is a suitable tool to be used in clinics and research areas in Korea, and can subjectively evaluate the characteristics of and attitudes for stuttering with a high correlation toward objective severity analysis. Particularly, SSS-R may be able to evaluate not only the severity of feelings and behaviors of stuttering but also the avoidance and locus of control, and thus can provide useful information for stuttering treatment.
