ABSTRACT

Background & Objectives
The objectives of this study were as follows: (1) to investigate the clients that participate in the voucher program for therapy and rehabilitation, and (2) to assess the therapeutic needs of the clients, depending on the ages of the children and their types of disabilities.
Methods
A total of 1,142 parents with disabled children who are participating in a voucher program for rehabilitation therapy participated in this study. All participants were asked to respond to our survey. The parents were asked the following questions regarding their children: general demographic information, their participation in speech programs, and which programs are most wanted. Each child’s present status and desires for therapeutic program were analyzed along with his age and disability type.
Results
Regardless of the disability type, the speech program was used frequently by the participants in this study. The parents of children with psychosis frequently participated in the play therapy program, while the parents of autistic children preferred the behavioral therapy program. The majority of the remaining parents enrolled their children in speech therapy. Speech therapy was the program that received the highest level of participation, regardless of age, but was especially important for children between the ages of 3 and 14 years old.
Discussion & Conclusion
Although the parents in this study expressed strong intentions for enrolling their children in rehabilitation therapy programs, they did not have good access to the information and services they needed. In order to support those families in need, a committee comprised of parents and professional rehabilitation teams should work cooperatively and effectively.
