ABSTRACT
Backgrounds & Objectives
As lhe bolus enters the pharyllX during a swallowing activity, laryngeal closure takes place by elevating the arytenoids and by descending the epiglottis in order to protect the airway. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether there are age and gender di fferences on laryngeal closure duration in normal adults. Metlwds: Video-clips of video fluoroscopic swallowing examinations of 10 younger subj ects and 10 older subjects were analyzed. Each group had five male and five female panicipants. Mean, standard deviation and range of laryngeal closure duration upon 5 ml and 10 ml th in liquid consumptions were analyzed.
Results
There was a significant di fference between younger and older subjects for laryngeal closure dUflltion during the swal10w (p < .01). No significant differences between male and fema le subjects were observed. Disclusion &
Conclusion
Laryngeal closure duration increases with increasing age. This phenomenon may be re lated to neuromuscular weakness. However, o lder people may adapt to preserve airway protection. This temporal measurement of iruyngeal closure provides important information on the diagnosis and trea tment of swallowing and swallowing d isorders.
