ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to observe the characteristics of communication-ability by analyzing the communicative intention of the language of mentally retarded children. The study objectives were two-fold: to investigate the communicative intention by using self-development analysis of mentally retarded children, and to determine the characteristics of communication-ability depending on mentally retarded condition. The participants were divided into two groups according to the social index, and the group characteristics were compared. The study subjects were 10 elementary students from a special school in the Gwangju area who were are capable of communicating either linguistically or non-linguistically. To document the children’s self-expression, conversations and behaviors of the mentally retarded children were videotaped at school from July to September 2005. Their activities such as playing and interacting with classmates and teachers were simultaneously taped. The children’s self-expression was rated according to the modified Hong & Kim’s(2001) “Analysis table of communication-ability function” and “Analysis table of conversation function”. The children’s communicative intentions were analyzed and the correlation with the characteristics of disorder condition was investigated. The results of this study were as follows. First, mentally retarded children tended to prefer answering and imitating someone else’s word, but they showed less interest in expressing their intention or will, or in describing an event or figure. This demonstrated the passive self-development of the children. Second, we classified the mentally retarded children into two groups according to social index and found that the aged children group did not talk except to answer or take a copy.
