ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to facilitate the educational services and to expand the educational opportunities of children with learning disabilities(LD) excluded from the present special education service delivery system, and with under-achievement included in regular education system. The survey data on the educational support for children with LD and for children with under-achievement were collected from 834 teachers at 31 elementary schools in Seoul, Inchon, and Kyunggyi province. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows. The total mean incidence of children with LD was not different from that of children with under-achievement; however, the total mean incidence of children with LD was higher than that of children with under-achievement in grades 2 - 3, while the mean incidence of children with under-achievement was higher than that of children with LD in grades 4 - 6. Most children with learning problems were placed in regular classes, but especially the placement rate of children with LD in grades 2 - 3 was higher than that of other groups in regular and special classes. Based on these results, this study discussed the needs of early identification and intervention for children with LD, the expansion of remedial education opportunities, and the educational support to regular classroom teachers and children with learning problems.
