ABSTRACT
The purpose of the present study was to investigate discour se cohesion in the written language of the children with hearing loss. The discour se cohesion was analyzed through the propositional analysis for the intra- sentence cohesion and the text cohesion analysis for the inter - sentence cohesion. Written compositions were elicited through the use of the No. 5 Picture in the Language Problem Solving Kit from 42 children with hearing loss at ages of 11, 12, and 13. The children were divided into the two groups according to the story structural patterns they produced: the comp lete s tory group (n = 19) and the no s tory group (n = 23). There were significant differences in the total number of propositions, text cohesive devices, the ratio of propositional use, and text cohesive devices between the two groups. N o s tory group used macro-propositions, micro- propositions, and text cohesive divices significantly less than did the comp lete s tory group. And no s tory group produced proportionately more macro-propositions and text cohesive devices, but less micropropositions, than did the comp lete s tory group. The result s indicate that no s tory group introduced many topics without elaborating them. The degree of explanation of writing proficiency on propositions and text cohesive devices was also investigated. The result s showed that the magnitudes of the effect size of writing proficiency on macro-proposition, micro-proposition, and text cohesive devices were 18.8 %, 30.5 %, and 33.3 %. The implication of the findings were discussed with respect to the language assessment and teaching for the children with hearing loss.
