ABSTRACT
The present study was undertaken (1) to investigate the definition s, characteristics, evaluation and treatment of developmental apraxia of speech (DAS ) through literature review, and (2) to report a case study of evaluation and treatment of a child who was assumed to have DAS. The case study verified the following core characteristics of DAS shown in the current literature: (1) inconsistency of error patterns within and between sessions , (2) sequencing difficulties when producing multisyllabic words, (3) slow diadochokinetic rates , (4) high frequency of groping/ silent posturing while producing phonemes, and (5) slow treatment progress. T hose attributes were different from those of functional articulation or phonological disorder s . Therefore, we emphasize the importance of differential diagnosis of DAS from other speech disorder s on the basis of aforementioned characteristics.
