ABSTRACT
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of computer-assisted intervention (CAI) on 1) the accuracy of verb expression, 2) the diversity of verb use(NDW in verbs), and 3) the number of complex sentences. The computer program used in this study was “what’s momoya? momo!”, which was developed for the children with language impairments by an Ewha research team and Eduangel Co. A multiple probe design across the subjects was used. Three children aged from 5;2 to 6;1 with delayed language served as the participants. The children were taught forty verbs with using the animated CAI. The computer program was implemented with a speech therapist's conversation and an expansion technique. All three of the participants showed sharp increases for their accuracy of verb expressions. The acquired skills were generalized with a line-drawing stimulus and the skills were maintained for three weeks after the termination of the training. In terms of the NDW in the verbs and the number of complex sentences, only slight increases with wide ranges were shown by the three children. The results of this study indicate that CAI could be effectively used to teach verbs and to facilitate stimuli generalization with the clinician’s guidance. Further research should be conducted to utilize the CAI in a more inclusive environment.
